Broadsands Beach Huts

Earlier last week with the weather being so lovely, we jumped in the car again straight after work and went over to Broadsands for an evening stroll.

Many of the beach huts have quirky designs and numbers so I took a photo of all of them and put this together. People really love their huts.

The newer pastel coloured huts which are bigger (and more expensive).

There were quite a few people about enjoying the beautiful evening, including plenty of fishermen.

Our new home will be somewhere in here

The supermoon was just rising and before it became too dark I took the picture below with the reflection in the water. It's actually a lot darker than all these evening images make it look.

On Thursday night we went off to the Square and Compass near Ilminster in Somerset and saw the wonderful Andy Fairweather Low and his brilliant band The Lowriders. Just to remind you if you're not sure who he is, his most recognisable songs are Wide Eyed and Legless, (If Paradise was) Half as Nice, Bend Me Shape Me.

I have been looking at more birding blogs recently, as it's something I'd really like to improve upon, since we have so many interesting birds here in Devon. The West Cornwall Ringing Group has caught my eye and they have links to more birding blogs. Fabulous images of birds and lots of interesting stuff . I will be watching out for the ringed birds too from now on.

I've also booked on a half day bird watching course at Broadsands in December. Our teacher will be Mike Langman (the same guy who ran the Berry Head photography course last year), so I'm really looking forward to it.
..................................
And lastly

The RSPB are heading this campaign with Bob, the beautiful red squirrel and hoping to get the required 150,000 signatures. So please take a look if you have the time and vote, lots of fun things and images on the webpage too.

Have a good week whatever you are doing.

  1. I love that montage of beach huts at the top of your post. So lovely to see the sea in your piccies and great idea about the bird watching. You'll have to let us know how the course goes. I think I'm going to be doing some winter bird surveys this year which should be interesting.

    1. Thanks CT, some of the insides are wonderful, very seaside themes with bunting and lots of lovely things to make everyone who used them feel special. There will be plenty of birds to watch as the woods and the seashore are so close, I'll be busy, that's for sure.

  2. I love the hut with the seagulls painted on the door! It won't be long now before you'll be able to take that evening stroll whenever you like.. it's a bit of a drive for us but I do enjoy it when we can get to the coast.

    1. I know Jessica, I'm getting quite excited. We went again on Sunday and had our lunch on the beach. There were lots of people enjoying the beach huts and the sea, swimming and kayaking, and making lunch on the camping gas stove.

  3. I love your photos of beach huts and the way people have personalised them.
When I think back to childhood, my parents always hired a beach hut for the summer. I can smell the damp wet sand inside the hut now, and the noise from my father's primus stove as he boiled water for coffee into which he then put tinned condensed milk - very unhealthy!!!
I am gazing at the photo where you will be living and wondering which light will be yours.

    1. Many thanks Rosemary, they are so popular now and people really do love them, I think it's so nice that they have had those little extras added, some of the insides are very pretty too. It's difficult to see exactly where our new home might be but it's over to the left somewhere and we can't wait.

  4. I loved all the decorations on those beach huts. The location of your new home looks wonderful! You sound like us keep returning to where we are moving to, the whole process of buying seems to take so long. Hope your decluttering goes well. Sarah x

    1. Thank you Sarah, we were back again on Sunday with our sandwiches packed and a flask of tea, we sat on the beach and just looked out to sea. It was very busy too. We still have to exchange..so feels like a long way off yet. We sold more things on ebay today, took items off to the Animals in Distress shop and went to the recycling centre...but I'm sure we are nearly there now,,,there can't be much more left...can there?

  6. I love the beach hut pictures, especially all the different numbers, it is lovely to see rows of them all the same like the new pastel coloured ones you showed, but I really love the individual different ones the best! Your moon pictures are so lovely, especially the one with the reflection on the water, it looks very ethereal to me. Hope that you have a good week and that all is well with you. xx

    1. Agree totally Amy, the colours and the lovely individual decorations make them look so good. I think the pastel ones can't be altered, but they are brand new and seem lovely inside. It was almost dark when I took the last moon shot, I was just waiting as long as I could for it to come up fully.

  7. Love the beach hut photos and the pastel shade ones are lovely :) What a beautiful location for your new home - I do hope its not too long before you can move in.

The mention of Andy Fairweather-Lowe brought back some memories!!! I didn't realise he was still performing - must have been a great night out :)

    1. So do we, it all seems to be taking so long! We had a terrific time at the concert, he was brilliant. He has worked as a session musician for years, toured with Eric Clapton and done lots of things. He has some great people performing on his albums too and tours regularly.

  9. I hadn't noticed the pastel coloured huts at Broadsands before, thanks for the pics. A good Devon bird site is Devon Bird News: http://www.devonbirds.org/news/bird_news/devon_bird_sightings

    1. Hello, thanks for stopping by and for the website link, yes I do visit it to see what's going on locally and Mike Langman posts there too. The pastel beach huts are fairly new just over a year old now.

  10. You do realize I am now singing Bend me Shake me and probably will be all night in my head!!! I used to really love AF-L. Tell me, does he still please the eye?!

I loved the photos of the beach huts. People get so much pleasure from them and you can understand why they make them such special places, a real home from home, and always associated with nice things.

I hope your move goes smoothly - that looks a nice spot to relocate to.

    1. Well now...when he came on stage he said "in case you're looking around wondering where Andy is....I'm here..it's me" So that might give you an idea of how much he has changed and he's 66 years old now. However I thought he looked great and more than anything he still really loves music.
Thanks, the move seems a long way off yet!

  11. Those beach huts are wonderful and I love that sign that says Beach Therapy and the bird on one roof. The photo of your moonlit water is gorgeous and the bungalows, well you must be getting excited about moving in. All super photos and your evening with Andy and his band must have been lovely.

    1. Thanks Denise, the beach huts are great fun aren't they. I don't know what I'd do if I had one...probably spend far too much time in it!
This buying process is going very slow right now, so we're a bit fed up right now. However Andy was a wonderful distraction and we had a great night out together.

  12. I too love your montage. Beach huts have an even bigger charm lined up together (not a sight seen up my way). We enjoy a few beaches but it is woodland and rivers that I would miss. Delighted to hear you are discovering your new location. Lovely shots with that super moon. Good to see Bob again :-)

    1. Hello Shirley, they are lovely in a big colourful line and I love what people have done to them. We went a couple of evenings before I took these photos and the moon was even better but I didn't take my camera.

    1. Hello Chris, many thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I hope to get much better at photographing and identifying sea birds. Cirl Buntings are often spotted in the car park at Broadsands, I've never seen one so I shall be joining the other spotters to catch a glimpse and hopefully some good images.
