Happy Christmas from Buckfast Abbey

An English Medieval Monastery originally founded in 1018 and the Abbey Church below, rebuilt by hand by a group of four to six monks in the early 1900s. This is a magnificent structure both inside and out. The monks trained themselves to do all the work and taught each other.

We love visiting Buckfast Abbey and go quite often to enjoy the wonderful peace and tranquillity it brings to both of us. The Abbey and gardens seem to generate this despite the visitors.

Inside the Abbey Church is bright, warm and inviting.

There is a wonderful serenity in the Abbey Church and if you visit at 1pm, the monks can be heard singing their Midday Prayer in Gregorian Chant melodies

Fantastic details in the marble flooring (my photos really don't do it justice) and I love the simple wooden stool surrounded by magnificent objects. The Corona Lucis (crown of lights, below) hangs above it.

The monks hand make all the stained glass and this is only a tiny piece of the huge stained glass designs in the Chapel (where photographs are not allowed).

Below is an alter on which the hair shirt worn by St Thomas More is displayed (in a small glass case between the candles). If you'd like to know more here's a link to a news article about this well travelled garment.

Buckfast Abbey has a marvellous website which is well worth a visit, full interesting facts and beautiful photographs.

In the grounds of Buckfast Abbey are beautiful old buildings which house shops and this little Methodist church.

Wonderful mature trees, which must be hundreds of years old

The Lavender Garden

A view of the Grange Restaurant, which serves lovely food. The outdoor covered terrace overlooks the grounds.

The Sensory Garden, with a chamomile cushion to sit on and scented roses about your shoulders.

Entrance to the Physic Garden above, which is divided into four areas, herbs, medicinal, culinary, and poisonous.

We were back last weekend for a Festive Carol Service. The Buckfast Abbey Choir is wonderful and the lead Soprano has the most beautiful voice.

Wishing you all a happy festive period and a peaceful and healthy 2017
