About this blog

Our move
I have always lived in cities due to my work mostly. It's where I grew up and an environment I got to know. There are advantages to city living and some people wouldn't live anywhere else.
My holidays have mostly been sea and countryside locations. I have had a few city breaks but really didn't like them as much as being by the sea or in the remote parts of Scotland.

So along with my husband, a keen lover of the sea, we started to plan our great escape. All our holidays were spent looking at locations around the coast of Britain.

Why the Torbay area?
We loved Brixham and we came back several times to check it out before moving there a few years ago. I look at Torbay every day and think "wow what a great place to live".

There is so much to see and do all around the area. We moved house a while ago from Brixham and live a few miles down the road at Broadsands.

This blog
So this blog is about life in South Devon, including wildlife, places to visit, the odd moan about things and my garden wildlife project. Hopefully supported with lots of nice photos too!

I like taking photos, they're not great but, it makes me happy. So now my photos have a purpose and the blog keeps me focused, it's just what I needed. I have no idea why I didn't think of this before! I've put my best images onto Flickr.

Cameras I have a Nikon D3100 which I'm still getting used to.
I have a standard Nikon kit lens and a Nikon 200 mm telephoto lens which has a wonderful quality to it. I am enjoying my new Sigma macro 105 mm lens which is wonderful.

I have also added a Panasonic Lumix FZ72 Bridge camera to my kit. I felt I needed a much bigger zoom lens for wildlife, especially the seabirds, and carrying a 400 mm lens would have been too much for me.

Thanks for taking the time to read a bit more about me and the blog.

    1. Hi there Sally, thanks for taking a look at the blog. Yes they are all my photos! I feel I'm getting better at taking them and deciding which ones will work. It's just a hobby, but I love Brixham and think it deserves a few nice photos and someone to say just how lovely it is. Your shop is great (feeling guilty because we still haven't stopped by for a coffee yet). I have the article about your new shop from the Reconnect Magazine, and I've been meaning to put some info on the blog.

  4. Just discovered your Beautiful Brixham blog. What a great site and a fantastic advert for Brixham - well done!

I am involved with the Brixham Chamber of Commerce http://www.brixhamchamber.co.uk and wanted to ask you a couple of favours if I may.

Firstly, I found your site while searching for Brixham Sunday Market images. The Chamber runs the Sunday markets (and the Saturday Arts and Crafts markets) and will shortly be adding a page or two about these on our current site. Is there any chance you would give me permission to use some of your pictures on the Chamber site(s)? We would naturally give you a credit and a link back to your blog/site?

Secondly, could you please add our site http://www.brixhamchamber.co.uk to your Brixham Websites list?

    Many thanks.

    Mike

    2. Many thanks Suzie, much appreciated. I will be adding the market pages to our site shortly and will give you a photo credit/back link. Also wanted to see whether if there was any chance you could email me (mike@brixhamchamber.co.uk) hi-res copies of your market pics for some posters/promotions we are doing?
      Keep up the good work!

    2. Hi Francine,
We're looking for property in Brixham ourselves, relocating with two children.. It would be interested to know how you're settling in, is Brixham what you imagined it would be?

Sorry Suzie for hijacking your site, had the look at your photos, they're great ;o)
I was wondering, if you don't mind, would it be possible to read the overview of Brixham email you sent to Sarah Jane Gray? It would be very usefull for us, we've come to Torbay few times for holidays but never long enough to get to know it properly.. 13 hours drive from north of Scotland is a chore for the kids (I don't fly)

    3. Hi Monika, hello and thanks for finding the blog and taking a look around. I can't reply to you via email as you are set up as a noreply-comment@blogger.com, which means there is no email address to reply to. If you want to send me an email with a different email address I'd be more than happy to send it on. I've just realised that Sarah Jane Gray is set up the same so I guess that my email didn't get to here either! 13 hours is a long drive.

  6. Hi we have been looking at Brixham with a view to moving here when we retire and running a B and B but have heard a few unfavourable things about parts of the town? Most recently about St Mary's Square being used as a teenage, drinking hangout and having to have a curfew installed by the police and CCTV cameras. However we visited last year and although parts of the town seem a bit run down it looks as if things could be improving. What's your view Sarah? It would be great to have an 'insider's opinion? I think your blog is great btw

    1. Hello Sarah, thanks for taking a look at the blog and for leaving a comment. I have already replied to you by email and hope that it was a good overview of Brixham which will help you make your move. As you know Brixham has its problems just like anywhere, but you can't beat this location to provide you with a wonderful life, not far from Exeter and Bristol, great Torbay hospital, and so much to do. Come and spend some holiday time here at different times of the year and see how you feel-it's an important decision and you don't want to get it wrong!

  8. Thank you so much for replying, the more I read the more confident I feel that moving is the right step.
I sometimes read negative comments about the area and feel undermined. This is a huge step for me and it is good to be informed that this is not the case.I do hope that your move goes smoothly and your search for a beautiful springer is successful, but that you will always return to your pretty little harbour. With the most amazing fish I have ever tasted! I wish you well.

    1. I think you have to look at the fact that almost everywhere has its problems these days and Torbay is certainly no different, but if you pick your area carefully you should be OK.

  9. Hi! I'm really pleased to have discovered your blog. I'm yet another person who is seriously considering moving to Brixham so I also have careful considerations to make. I've been visiting Brixham regularly since I was a child and feel I know the town reasonably well, but I do have concerns about finding myself in an area where there could be social problems. I know that every town has these areas but I would like to know which parts of town are best avoided, if any.

    1. Hello there, thanks for stopping by. I think the best way to research the area which will tell you more about the type of residents there may be and areas hit by crime is by searching on http://www.police.uk/devon-and-cornwall/ The crime maps will give the game away and show you where to avoid! The two wards concerning Brixham are St Marys with Summercombe and Berry Head with Furzeham.
However Brixham is a lovely place to live and there is crime everywhere so you must look at it as a whole. I would say jobs and traffic are two main concerns when thinking about a move here. Best of luck.

    1. Hello and thanks for leaving comments on the blog. How lovely to be moving to South Devon...It'll be windy at Berry Head so make sure your washing is secure on the line! Great places for eating are the Breakwater Bistro-absolute favourite of ours and many people we know. Also the Old Market House in the centre of Brixham-great for a coffee and a rest and the food is good. For Fish and Chips-can't beat Simply Fish! The Berry Head Hotel is lovely and the Guardhouse Cafe on Berry Head is fab.
Plenty of groups to join-Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust organise lots of events and walks, you can volunteer at the Berry Head Visitor Centre and take part in bird and sea counts. Pride in Brixham do a fab job with flower displays and generally keeping the place looking lovely-they're a nice bunch to join too. Also plenty of watersport clubs and I go to classes at Brixham ACL (adult and community learning) where there is so much to do and many people to meet.Good luck and keep me posted.

  12. Hi, nice to read that we have made the right choice to buy a house in Brixham. Second home actually. We live in France just 1/2 hour from Geneva and we have moutains but I longed to be by the sea and I missed UK. House will be finished in May and I am looking forward to discovering Brixham and there is to see and do.
